I will provide examples of challenging passages and will show how to apply the principles to clear up confusion. Problems can often be reduced to bite size when we think about them in the right way. They help create a mind-set from which to resolve troubling passages. It’s surprising how many foggy passages we can clarify as we apply these principles.

Some of these principles will stretch your thinking a bit. Many alleged discrepancies can be neutralized by making sure we look at them the right way. However, as much as we might like “magic” principles that erase problems, some of them may not be so easy to resolve on your own. It may be helpful to discuss difficult passages with others. You’re probably not the first person to notice or read confusing passages, and Christian friends or Bible study members may be able to offer thoughtful insights.

We will sometimes have to seek answers through good old-fashioned research. Fortunately, we can access many wonderful commentaries, books, and research tools to broaden our understanding of the background and correct interpretation of the Bible. Let’s start with Principles 1–4, which deal with a proper perspective and how to avoid being trapped by skeptics’ filters.
